Beckham's Milan Dream Comes True
ROME (AFP) — England international David Beckham will join AC Milan on loan in January, the Italian club said on Thursday.
The former England captain will join the team from January 7 when the Serie A season restarts following its winter break.
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliano had revealed earlier in the day that he was due for talks with Beckham's lawyers, who were in Milan, and now a deal has been agreed.
"Beckham has become a reality, it's no longer a dream," announced Galliani triumphantly.
Beckham is due to be unveiled officially on December 21 and eight days later will head out with the team to Dubai for a training camp.
He could then make his Serie A debut against against AS Roma in the Italian capital on January 11, however he won't be staying beyond a two- to three-month loan period.
"No-one has ever spoken about a permanent transfer, it's not a practical hypothesis because he has a contract with Galaxy who don't want to let him go, they (Beckham and his wife) like it there and he has a myriad of sponsorship contracts," added Galliani.
"Beckham's not coming here to mess around but to play football and he's fully aware of that."
The seven-time European champions first revealed the possibility of the loan move last week after rumours circulated that Beckham would train with the Italians during America's Major League Soccer off-season.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder currently plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, whom he joined 18 months ago, but needs to keep playing over winter to avoid losing match fitness and his place in the England squad.
England's Italian boss Fabio Capello has previously made it clear to Beckham that if he is not playing he won't be part of the England set-up.
Beckham has 107 caps for England and is the third most capped player in the country's history.
This moves means the golden boy of British football will have played for arguably the biggest club in the three biggest leagues in the world: England, Spain and Italy.

Ferguson Not Surprised at Beckham’s Proposed Move
MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Alex Ferguson isn’t surprised that David Beckham could return to European soccer on a loan deal because he believes the former England captain is used to a higher standard than is played in Major League Soccer.
“It is hardly a surprise,” said the Manchester United manager, who sold Beckham to Real Madrid five years ago. “Going to the United States does not get you the kind of football he is used to. It is not the right level of football, therefore coming back into the mainstream of the game is not a surprise.”
Beckham could move to AC Milan from the Los Angeles Galaxy in January, although the MLS team wants him back before its season starts in March. There is speculation, however, that Milan may try and turn the loan deal into a full transfer.
Beckham has played for the Galaxy for two seasons and the team has failed each time to reach the playoffs.
With the MLS season coming to an end, Beckham needs to continue playing competitive soccer or he will lose his place in the England squad.
England coach Fabio Capello, who used to be at Milan, sent Beckham on as a late substitute in the team’s four World Cup qualifying victories and is adamant that he will only select players who are in competitive action.
Real Madrid president Roman Calderon, who sold Beckham to the Galaxy in 2007, said Beckham can still be influential.
“He is a player who can give a lot to the club he signs for,” Calderon said in London.

Italy Turns To The Youth As The Way Forward
By Carlo Garganese, Goal.com
Ask any non-Italian football fan for their view on the Azzurri, and more often than not you will be greeted with a response, something along the lines of “old team.” While sometimes these kinds of charges are fuelled by jealousy and ignorance, there can be no doubting that in recent times they have been accompanied by an element of truth.
At Euro 2008, 14 of Italy’s original 23-man squad were over the age of 30, while the team that took to the field in the opening game against Holland was the oldest starting 11 in the history of the competition at 31 years and 56 days.
It has been stated on numerous occasions, since the Euros, that the time has now come for the Italian national team to turn the page and begin a new youthful era ahead of the 2010 World Cup. However, there were fears that Marcello Lippi was set to ignore these appeals, as his first couple of squads since returning to the helm were mainly composed of players who helped him win the World Cup in Germany two years ago.
The results were not great. Although Italy drew 2-2 with Austria in a friendly, before winning both of their opening World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus (2-1) and Georgia (2-0), the performances in these games were far from impressive, and indeed the Azzurri really did look like an “old team.”
Lippi finally rang the changes ahead of the double-header with Bulgaria and Montenegro. Mature or underachieving players such as Alessandro Del Piero and Andrea Barzagli were dropped from the squad, while four fresh faces were included – Christian Maggio, Fabiano Santacroce, Giuseppe Rossi and Simone Pepe. The youthful Riccardo Montolivo, Daniele Bonera and Antonio Nocerino all returned, too.
The Italy starting XI against Bulgaria on Saturday night had an average age of 27 and included debutant Pepe as well as the relatively inexperienced Montolivo and Andrea Dossena, who had just four caps between them. Rossi was also thrown on for his first cap midway through the second half. These were bold moves by Lippi when you consider that an away Bulgaria game could be considered, along with Ireland in Dublin, as Italy’s toughest match in the entire Group 8 calendar.
The results were very promising. Although a rather dour and uneventful game ended in a goalless draw, Italy, who was always going to be happy with a point, was almost always in control. The Azzurri looked solid, organized and authoritative in defense and midfield, and they were never in any danger of conceding a goal. In fact, Bulgaria did not create a chance all night, and goalkeeper Marco Amelia did not make a save until the 87th minute.
Compare Italy’s display on Saturday to its last away game in September when it was torn apart at times by Cyprus and was extremely lucky to win, and the improvements are marked. Granted, Italy’s fitness is far superior now than it was a month ago, but you must also take into consideration the fact that Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Grosso, Mauro Camoranesi, as well as a number of others including the blossoming Angelo Palombo, were injured for the trip to Sofia.
The fact that a youthful Italy could assert itself so well in a difficult environment is surely proof that the way forward now for Lippi over the coming months is to retain most of the young players. Italy is in a relatively weak group, so now is the time to prepare the youngsters mentally for South Africa.

Dinho Creates a Buzz
Ronaldinho has promised to take AC Milan back to the top of World football.
The San Siro was almost half full to see the official presentation of the Rossoneri's latest signing and the Brazilian promised to bring the glory days back.
The 28-year-old said: "I am here to win, I am still young and I have arrived at the right moment."
The signing of the former Barcelona front man has initiated a wave of enthusiasm with the fans and the Milan giants have had a surge in season ticket sales since the news was made official.
He added: "I can only thank everybody for the welcome and affection shown. I will repay them for what they have shown so far by giving them lots of goals and entertainment."
"For me it is a very special moment. I have no doubts, it was my dream to play for this team, for these fans - I wanted this shirt."
The lack of Champions League football was not a deterrant for a player who is used to setting the standards.
"This problem motivates me even more to try and do well and get Milan back into the competition."
The Milan faithful may be eager to see their new player in action but they will have to wait till the end of August when the Olympics will be over as that is the first objective for the former World Player of the Year.
"It is a very important comtetition for Brazil, we have never won it. It is fundamental for my career as well and will not create problems for anyone here at Milan."

Ranieri launches Juventus "The Title Is Not Taboo"
It’s already time for Juventus to get together. Ranieri: "I am very satisfied with the transfers. We must be ambitious right from the Champions League qualifiers.” Blanc: “Xabi Alonso? The midfielder is a 30 million investment. We need t
o assess him.”
VINOVO (Turin), 4 July 2008 – Everyone concentrated on the league. Juventus have quickly agreed their targets for the season. Claudio Ranieri’s words were endorsed by Jean Claude Blanc and each player in turn. Juventus have had a year's grace in which to work out how to return to the top. Now the aim is to triumph again. Blanc and Ranieri are aiming to win the championship without ignoring the Champions League. These are the club’s targets announced during the presentation of the new season’s shirts.
RANIERI - “We don’t have any taboos, not even the championship. We must be ambitious. We could have done it last year. This year we are aiming to win the title. I hope that this year’s team is not very different to last year’s. We need to improve and new arrivals will bring moral, technical and fighting spirit to an already competitive group of players. Regarding reinforcements I can say that we are only missing a second goalkeeper and a midfielder. We’ll choose a midfielder who’ll give me the option of changing things around. Someone like Stankovic? He is an all round quality player. He can play all midfield roles and is complete. The bad mood of some fans will pass after a couple of excellent performances. The three youngsters back from loan will be decisive. I don’t take age into account when choosing who to send onto the pitch. Giovinco had a great season with Empoli and is someone who knows how to beat a man and score.”
BLANC - “We always aim to do our utmost and to improve. We came third last year. That means that this year we should be second or first. We entered the transfer market in January with Mellberg and Sissoko. Then Amauri has further strengthened an already competitive forward line and none of the others will be leaving. With Giovinco, De Ceglie and Marchisio we are continuing with our project of going for young Italian players. The contract renewals for Nedved and Chiellini have been important while Ekdal was bought with the future in mind. After Knezevic we are looking for a second goalkeeper and a midfielder. Xabi Alonso is one of the names mentioned, but before deciding we must assess him carefully: an investment of between 10 and 30 million euros is an important matter. We’ll take someone whose technical qualities best suit this Juventus team.”

Lippi Takes Over as Italy Coach Again
ROME (AP)—Marcello Lippi gave up a life of leisure to return as Italy’s national team coach, less than two years after guiding the Azzurri to their fourth World Cup title.
“Naturally, I’m very happy to pick up where I left off. But picking up where I left off also means that the Euros didn’t go so great, or I would still be on the beach in Viareggio,” the well-tanned Lippi said at a news conference Tuesday, referring to his hometown on the Tuscan seaside.
Lippi was rehired last week when Roberto Donadoni’s contract was terminated after Italy lost to eventual champion Spain on penalty kicks in the European Championship quarterfinals last month.
“We’re still the World Cup champions. We’ve got the team that won the Club World Cup (AC Milan). We have a top under-23 squad. And we are one of the favorites for the Olympics,” Lippi added. “The world of Italian football should hold its head high.”
Lippi’s first task it to qualify Italy for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Azzurri are grouped with Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Ireland and Montenegro, with the group winner advancing and the second-place team most likely going to a playoff.
“These last two years were not completely lost,” Lippi said. “A large number of players from the World Cup stayed in the group, and Donadoni inserted some key new players.”
Italy looked old, slow and overly defensive, and no Italian forward scored at the Euros.
“We’ve got to show a bit of daring in certain situations, like in the semifinal with Germany, when I put four forwards on,” Lippi said, recalling the 2-0 extra-time win in the World Cup semifinals. “We’re going to try and show some aggressive football right away.”
Lippi resigned immediately after leading Italy to its fourth World Cup title in Berlin, largely because he was uncomfortable that he and his son had been linked to the Italian match-fixing scandal.
“I would never have left if it wasn’t in the middle of that situation,” Lippi said. “It was very tough to see my name and family members linked to those things. At that time, it wasn’t possible to continue. Now the situation is different, the discussion is open and we’ve gotten through that period.”
Lippi’s first game back in charge will be an exhibition against Austria on Aug. 20 at Nice, France.

Juventus Head East
Juventus flew out on their end-of-season tour of Asia and Australia on Tuesday.
The Bianconeri will play three matches over a nine-day period, with two games in China - against South China of Hong Kong and Shanghai, followed by a transfer to Australia to face Melbourne Victoria on May 30.
The party will be without Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi and Giorgio Chiellini who are expected to join up with the Italy squad to prepare for the upcoming European championships.
Also missing will be full-back Zdenek Grygera who has been selected for the Czech Republic squad for Euro 2008, and midfielder Mohamed Sissoko.
However, coach Claudio Ranieri can still count upon a mixture of youth and experience with David Trezeguet leading the attack while Nicola Legrottaglie will marshall the defence and Pavel Nedved controls the midfield.

Kaka Set To Lead The Line
Ricky Kaka will play as a striker next season for AC Milan according to Adriano Galliani.
The Brazilian was moved into a more advanced role at the beginning of this season and although the 26-year-old was initially reluctant to shift position, the Rossoneri vice-president revealed that the club top scorer's move to bolster the attack would be made permanent.
He said: "We will be adopting a new tactic next year, Kakà will be our support striker for next season."
The European and World Footballer of the Year has scored 15 goals this season despite struggling with injury and his accuracy in front of goal has convinced the San Siro club as well as the player that his future lies in this direction.
Although such a move would increase competition for the remaining attacking place, Galliani revealed that main contenders Filippo Inzaghi and Alexandre Pato would provide the main goal threat.
He added: "I think this is an excellent solution but up front there can only be one striker playing in front of him. Inzaghi is doing very well at the moment so Pato will have to alternate with him."
Such a move would alter the strategy of the Milan giants in the transfer market this summer, with the addition of only one striker now the priority which could pave the way for the return of Marco Borriello after his magnificent season with Genoa.

Berlusconi on Super League
Silvio Berlusconi has launched the first salvos on the road to a possible breakaway league in Italian and European football.
The 71-year-old was appearing on the Italian "Radio Radio" programme to outline his new proposals to keep Italian football at the forefront of the sporting world.
The Italy Prime Minister-elect said: "The top clubs from the big cities have to have their own championship because when you invest so much in a team it cannot be thought to go and play against a provincial side in a stadium that holds only around 20,000 fans and is half-empty anyway."
He added: "When two great teams play then the stadiums are packed and there is an incredible television audience. Then of course, only with top teams can we become main players in Europe again."
Berlusconi, who will stand down as AC Milan president after becoming Prime Minister for a third time, also proposed a separate league for teams with fewer spectators and went on to say that Italian clubs should take the English stadiums as a model and to build commercial centres around them.
Looking to the future he believes that people would be "in favour" of these proposals and that "licenses could be given" for them.

Kaka Return Boosts AC Milan
Ricardo Kaka is set to return for AC Milan's late push for a Champions League place.
The World Player of the Year has been sidelined with backache since March 19 to add to the long-term knee injury which has plagued the Brazilian's season.
However, the 25-year-old has been back training with his teammates and is ready to stake a claim for a starting place in the Game Day 32 fixture against Cagliari alongside Filippo Inzaghi, who has recovered from a hernia injury.
Following defeat to Atalanta at the weekend, the Milan club now sit sixth in Serie A, still four points adrift of fourth place and qualification to Europe's premier competition.
The Rossoneri must face the revitalised Sardinian outfit without the services of full-back Massimo Oddo, who is to undergo a knee operation, and Alessandro Nesta, serving the first of a two-match suspension.

Totti Helps Heal AS Roma Ills
Francesco Totti has revealed that beating Real Madrid has brought him back to good health.
Despite a bout of flu, the AS Roma captain was instrumental in the Champions
League win on Tuesday.
He said: "I was feeling ill with a high temperature and was actually sick before the match.
"But after the victory, I feel great."
Totti put on his best performance to guide the capital side to an important first-leg victory after struggling in recent games from foot and back strains.
The Giallorossi title challenge has stuttered as a consequence of their top goalscorer's lack of form with two defeats, against Siena and Juventus, in three Serie A games.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old and teammate Amantino Mancini have patched up their differences after two years of silence.
The Brazilian winger said: "I've always had an understanding with Totti on the field, even when we weren't speaking off it because of our stubborn pride.

Cassano Focused on Playing
Antonio Cassano has been grabbing the headlines for all the right reasons.
The Sampdoria striker lit up the Derby of the Laterns against Genoa with a sublime
performance.
Hero status in the eyes of the Doria fans was assured when in the dying moments he bamboozled three defenders before delivering a telling cross for Christian Maggio to score the winner.
However, the 25-year-old admitted he was making up for lost time, having failed to prove his worth at Real Madrid over two seasons.
The Bari-born star said: "I became too distracted in Madrid, away from the life of a footballer.
"I wanted to come back to Italy because Madrid wasn't the type of city for me to be a sportsman."
Despite some controversial on-field antics, the former AS Roma star is now thriving in his new-found role as team leader as coach Walter Mazzarri's side chase a UEFA Cup spot.
He added: "I could easily see myself signing a long-term contract here. I have even told the president I will reduce my salary if he can build a title-challenging side."
